PERA fully supports the Council’s policies on tackling the Climate Emergency and working towards carbon neutrality. We also support the Council’s policy to effect a switch from private cars to mass transport, cycling and walking. The Council’s recent proposal to introduce a cycle route from the City Centre to the University (via Beckford Road and North Road), however, seems certain to fail on those fronts. It will also displace thousands of car journeys onto densely residential streets. With no plausible case to counter what seemed inevitably adverse environmental impact, we have concluded that the proposed trial was unsupportable, especially with the serious adverse impacts it would have on many residents.
